Activities, January 4-9

Hi Íbero students!

Here are the activities for the first week of January (right after break). Hope to have you join us!

Are you familiar with Argentine cinema? Monday, January 4, we will be showing Luna de Avellaneda, a movie filmed in Buenos Aires, here at Íbero. For free! Come to aula Cine at 2 pm.

Tuesday, January 5, there will be the weekly asado at the Art Factory. Go to Piedras 545 at 8:30 pm for grilled beef of all sorts, choripán (chorizo sandwiches), drinks and conversation with other visitors to Buenos Aires. A good chance to get to know other Íbero students outside the classroom! Bring AR $35 to cover the cost of your food and drinks, and don’t forget to RSVP with Callie in the Íbero office so we can give Art Factory a rough idea of how many people to expect.

Wednesday, January 6, we suggest a trip to El Cuartito, a pizzeria on Talcahuano 937. Open since 1934, this restaurant is a Buenos Aires classic and well worth the trip for wonderful pizza and empanadas. Open starting at noon. Don’t forget your cash, because they don’t take credit cards.

Thursday, January 7, we suggest another Buenos Aires must-see: Café Tortoni, arguably the most famous café in the city. The classic building with its antique wood, stained glass and high ceilings is the perfect place to have coffee and do some people-watching. Open all day. Serves coffee, breakfast, lunch, drinks, dessert, etc. For a preview, here’s the website. Avenida de Mayo 825.

Friday, January 8, we are offering two activities. In the afternoon, we will have a conversation workshop with Carolina at Íbero. This is a chance to chat in Spanish and practice what you’ve learned in class. Aula Cine, free, 2 pm. Later on, we recommend a live music show at the Art Factory Hostel—see some local bands perform! Art Factory is on Piedras 545, and the show starts at 9 pm. Don’t forget to mention you’re an Íbero student.

Saturday, January 9, we suggest a trip to Barrio Chino. Did you know that Buenos Aires has a Chinatown? Go to the intersection of Juramento and Arribeños—or take the train (get on the Ramal Mitre) from Retiro to Estación Belgrano—and wander the shops and restaurants for an afternoon. Let us know what you think!

Stay tuned for upcoming activities and Íbero news!

Activities for December 14-18

Hola Estudiantes,

Here’s the rundown of next week’s activities. This is our last week of class before the holiday break (we’re gone from December 19 through January 3), so take advantage!

For Monday, December 14, our suggestion is to go to La Bomba de Tiempo, a percussion performance. It’s quite the experience. All their pieces are improvised, so every performance is different. Plus, each week there’s a different musical influence—African/Hawaiian/Middle Eastern/you name it. La Bomba is held at the Centro Cultural Konex (Sarmiento 3131). The show starts at 8, but get there early—the line can go around the block! Cost: AR $20.

Tuesday, December 15, there will be one of our tried-and-true activities: an asado (Argentine barbeque) at the Art Factory Hostel.

Wednesday, December 16, we suggest a trip to the MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires). Usually, an adult admission costs AR $15, but on Wednesdays it’s discounted to AR $5. The Wednesday hours are from 12 to 9 pm. For more general information, click here.

Address: Figueroa Alcorta 3415.

Thursday, December 17, we will be showing Esperando la Carroza (1985), a classic Argentine comedy. The showing will be at Íbero (Uruguay 150) at 2 pm (aula Cine). For free. More information? Check out the description on IMDB.

Friday, December 18, there will be a live music event at 9 pm at the Art Factory Hostel (Piedras 545). Kick off the weekend with a taste of the local music scene. Don’t forget to mention that you’re an Íbero student. See you there!

-Reminder—Dec. 19th through Jan. 3rd Íbero is closed. Classes start again on the 4th.-

If you’re still around Saturday, December 19, we suggest a trip to Museo Casa Carlos Gardel. Carlos Gardel is a famous tango singer who grew up in the Abasto neighborhood. Open from 10 am to 7 pm. The address is Jean Jaurés 735, and it costs—get this—AR $1. Almost free. For more general information, click here.

December 7-11

Hola Íbero students!

We want to let you all know what's going on these next few weeks--we have lots of activities planned and hope that you can join us! From now on, we're offering a mix of official activities (events with specific times and meeting places) with suggestions (things you can do on your own time frame).

Since this post is coming out midweek, first we'll fill you in on the previous activities and then let you know what's happening the rest of the week.

This past Monday, December 7,
for example, there was an asado at the Art Factory Hostel. An asado is an Argentine barbeque, and you definitely have to experience one before you leave the country. We were reminded why Argentina's reputation for having the best beef in the world is justified as soon as we tasted the juicy grilled steaks and the choripán (chorizo sausage in the middle of a fresh baguette). The smell alone is worth the trip, and we love the relaxed and friendly atmosphere at Art Factory.

Tuesday the 8th
was a national holiday, so there was no class. A relaxing day off.

Today (Wednesday the 9th),
we're suggesting dinner at El Sanjuanino--a restaurant where you can get a taste of traditional Argentine food. This means freshly baked empanadas, locro, tamales, matambre...and of course wine and traditional desserts like flan with dulce de leche. El Sanjuanino is open from 7 pm to 1 am. Dinner and drinks should cost about 30 pesos.

Address: Posadas 1515 (Posadas and Callao)

Thursday, December 10,
we will be showing Historias Minimas, an Argentine movie, for free, here at Íbero. We won't give away the plot, but the gorgeous scenery (it was filmed in Patagonia) will make you want to do some traveling. Come to the Cine room at 2 pm.

Friday, December 11,
there will be two activities. The first (from 2:30 to 3:30, at Íbero) is a conversation workshop with Carolina. This is perfect for people who want some extra practice using the Spanish they learn in class. Plus, it's free!

Later on, at Art Factory, there will be a show with a couple of live bands at 9 pm.
Address: Piedras 545

Saturday, December 12,
there will be a caminata (guided walk) around San Telmo beginning at 11 am. Be sure to RSVP with Emilio, the guide, at 4981 7160 anytime from now till 10:20 am Saturday. The tour costs 25 pesos and leaves from Art Factory (Piedras 545). San Telmo is one of the oldest and most historic neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and definitely worth a wander--explore the cobblestone streets, turn-of-the-century cafes, tango bars and colonial architecture.

Stay tuned for next week's activities--nos vemos!

--Un gran saludo from the Íbero staff!
